People@Work: For Many Americans, a Job Means Health Care

A recent study finds that Americans are less willing to leave an existing job. Workers had lots of reasons for staying put, but a big one is fear of losing employer-provided health coverage. Would passage of the health care overhaul change that?

Boycotting Wal-Mart? Good Luck With That

A couple of recent incidents have Wal-Mart suffering a doozy of a PR headache this week, with two different groups are talking about boycotting the world’s largest retailer. Wal-Mart is paying attention to the threats — but it’s not remotely worried, and it shouldn’t be.

People@Work: For Better or Worse, Happiness Comes to the Workplace

Don’t Worry, Be Happy: That popular 1980s song by vocalist Bobby McFerrin “is a pretty neat philosophy in four words,” as he put it, about keeping one’s head up when faced with the mundane problems of everyday life. Workers today could benefit, it seems, from its cheery if simplistic message. High unemployment, increased workloads, stagnant wages and 401(k) plans that more resemble piggy banks than nest eggs have many employees feeling dour. And bosses have taken note. A growing list of companies, including American Express (AXP) and KPMG, have jumped on the so-called “happiness coaching” bandwagon, hiring consultants to teach employees how to tackle problems effectively and feel better about work — call it the corporate equivalent of saying “the glass is always half full.”

People at Work: Career-Management Tips for the New Year

The last few years sure have been challenging for U.S. workers. Many more Americans have lost their jobs, and those who remain are likely working harder to take up the slack left by those laid off. Though the economy is beginning to show signs of improvement, it will likely take several years to replace the 7 million jobs that have been erased since the Great Recession began in late 2007.

Bernanke: Blame the Housing Bubble on Lax Regulations

Many opponents of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke blame the Fed’s monetary policy for the housing bubble that burst in 2007. But on Sunday, Bernanke used his speech before the American Economic Association in Atlanta to explain why he thinks regulatory failure — not monetary policy failure — caused housing to overinflate. That does seem to be the case, but the Fed is one of those primary regulators that didn’t react quickly enough to prevent the crisis.

Relief comes to the unemployed and to homebuyers

Unemployed workers facing the loss of their benefits have a little less to worry about. On Thursday, a bill passed by lawmakers in the House of Representatives allowed for an extension of those benefits. The legislation also expands an $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit and gives business owners affected by the economic downturn a tax credit.

The measure passed the House by an overwhelming margin — 403-12 — and now goes to President Barack Obama to sign, which he has said he would do as early as Friday. The Senate passed the bill 98-0 on Wednesday. It extends a lifeline to jobless Americans who would otherwise see unemployment benefits disappear starting next month.

Deaths drop, suicides spike at work

Filed under:

Workplace deaths are down 10 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unfortunately, the number of suicides jumped 28 percent in 2008, the last year or which data is available.

A total of 5,071 fatalities occurred in the workplace in 2008. This is the lowest rate since the BLS started keeping track in 1992. Just shy of five percent of these deaths (251) are suicides, the highest rate since 1992. Despite having the data, the BLS doesn’t understand the reason for the suicide surge but plans to research it further.

A number of factors could be responsible for the change. For the drop in overall fatalities, a one percent decline in the number of hours worked relative to 2007. Lower workload and less time worked usually result in less fatigue and accidents, which translates to fewer deaths. The construction industry, which usually leads in workplace fatalities, showed declines ahead of other industries in hours worked. Fatal injuries in the construction sector fell 20 percent.

The NSFW Seat Altea print ad campaign — Click above for high-res image gallery

Seat wants to make sure that people in the U.K. don’t equate a family car with being boring, and what better more Latin way to do it than by using happy naked people? The print campaign for the Seat Altea features two “parents” hopping out of their Seat and frolicking on their way to a skinny dipping session. This kind of behavior is apparently called “Seattitude,” and you’ll be brimming with it if you own an Altea (Spanish models not included).

You can read the press release after the jump and have a gander at the high-res gallery below. Keep in mind that the ads are probably Not Safe For Work… unless looking at naked Spaniards is an acceptable thing to do at your workplace.
