First Droid, then AdMob: Google goes for Apple’s jugular in mobile business

The $750 million acquisition of mobile advertising network AdMob by search giant Google (GOOG) signals a new stage of the battle for the soul of the mobile Internet between Google and its arch-rival Apple (AAPL). The acquisition gives Google the strongest player in the fast-growing market for putting advertisements on smartphones. And it’s the latest brawny move by Google in an unspoken war that has broken into pitched battle in the past two weeks.

On Friday, Google for the first time put an advertisement on its home page, a spot for Motorola’s (MOT) Droid smartphone. The Droid, offered exclusively by wireless behemoth Verizon (VZ), is powered by Google’s own Android mobile operating system. Early indications suggest the Droid will be the strongest competitor to Apple’s iPhone to date. Real estate on Google’s landing page is a priceless gift from the Google gods, letting Verizon easily reach millions and millions of users who go to Google.com to search.

Google and Facebook: How two giants can transform the landscape in a day

It sure was fitting that Google (GOOG) killed an entire product segment on Oct. 28, just a day before the 80th anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash. And appropriately enough, on Wednesday the tech-heavy NASDAQ tumbled mightily. Contributing to that fall was the pummeling of GPS makers Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom (TMOAF), whose shares plunged 16% and 21%, respectively. TomTom shares kept falling the next day, dropping by 11% more.

That’s because search giant Google unveiled what appears to be a revolutionary GPS guidance unit for smart phones running Google’s Android operating system. Collectively, those two GPS companies lost more than $2 billion in market cap. Even shares of iPhone maker Apple (AAPL) fell by a startling 5%, more than retracing all the recent gains the stock had made after posting stellar earnings last week.

Apple earnings beat the Street but the easy days could soon be over

No doubt, Apple earnings were a home run. They beat the Street numbers by 40 cents and beat whisper numbers by another 20 cents. Shares blasted through the $200 mark in the after hours as investors went berserk over the Mac company, which reported earnings for the period ending September 26, of $1.67 billion, up from $1.14 billion in the same period one year ago.

Oddly enough, this quarterly release could signify the last of the salad days for Apple (AAPL). On the horizon, powerful competitors are massing for a concentrated assault on Apple.

Qwest Wireless to shutter in 60 days

Filed under:

The Denver, Colo. telecom, Qwest, announced today that it would stop providing wireless services in October. This comes as no surprise. Qwest (Q) and other carriers that are reselling wireless services, have struggled mightily to gain a critical mass of customers. Qwest is what’s called a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (or MVNO). This means Qwest did not actually have its own network. Rather, the operator leased space on Verizon’s (VZ) network and used Verizon’s services.

The idea was that Qwest could then sell a bundle of services including wireless, long distance, and residential, to customers. Bundles are more lucrative for phone and cable companies because the marginal cost of selling an additional service to an existing customer is very small. But bundling has not gained as much traction as the telcos and cablecos had hoped, in part due to the strength of national wireless brands like Verizon and AT&T (T). Verizon and AT&T have heavy retail presences that are expensive to maintain but essential for building foot traffic. Qwest had lagged in this department.

Hacker who aided Feds charged in theft of 130 million credit card numbers

Albert Gonzalez, a 28-year-old computer hacker, was indicted yesterday for stealing 130 million credit card numbers, topping his previous record of allegedly stealing 40 million credit card numbers in a series of Wi-Fi based intrusions of U.S. retailers, including TJ Maxx, Office Max and DSW. Gonzalez, known on the internet as “soupnazi,” worked as an informant for the Secret Service in 2003 to help expose credit identity thieves.

The Justice Department’s latest charges involving 130 million credit card numbers stolen between 2006 and 2008 will have to wait until two other cases against Gonzalez are heard. Gonzalez has been in custody since May 2008, when he was arrested for stealing credit card data at Dave & Buster’s. He was also indicted in another identify theft case, including data breaches at T.J. Maxx. He is awaiting trial in New York on the Dave & Buster’s case, then will face trial in Massachusetts on the T.J. Maxx breach, before he will face trial in New Jersey on the latest breach.
