Report: 2011 Ford SYNC system can block features while vehicle is moving

Ray LaHood, the Department of Transportation’s boss, recently had the revelation that looking down at your phone for four seconds while behind the wheel means you’re “driving the length of a football field without watching the road.” The DoT goes on to claim that distracted driving took the lives of up to 6,000 Americans in 2008 alone, with many more severely injured. Ford knows the stats and believes that texting while driving should be banned, but at the same time, many of the company’s vehicles come with SYNC, arguably the most interactive infotainment system on the market.

The Detroit News reports that Ford’s second generation SYNC system will address distracted driving head-on with the ability to block out all external stimuli while the vehicle is in motion. The “Do Not Disturb” switch will be available first in the MyFord Touch-equipped 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX models. The DND button will block phone calls and text messages while retaining hands-free calling and 911 Assist, which dials up 911 in the event of an emergency. Also blocked is typing on a keypad for text or Internet and narrowing navigation and phone choices. The only question now is: Who’s going to turn the feature on?

Chrysler expands 60-day ‘risk-free’ return policy to Jeep, Dodge and Ram

Back in February, Chrysler rolled out its “Minivan Pledge,” which gave customers the choice of returning their vehicle within 60 days if they were unhappy in any way. The program must have been successful for Team Pentastar, because the program is now being expanding to all Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Truck models. Chrysler Lead Executive for U.S. Sales Fred Diaz says in the company’s press release that the program will give customers “the confidence to know they made the right purchase or they can return the vehicle no questions asked.”

Chrysler has also announced July incentives, which, we’re guessing, will render the 60 day guarantee almost completely useless. See, customers will be able to choose from incentives like zero percent financing for up to 72 months, cash rebates of up to $4,000 or the 60-day guarantee. So if you’re in, say, a Dodge dealership and you’re given a choice of $4,000 on the hood or a 60-day return policy that can only add up to $1,000 ($500 per month), which would you take? Hit the jump to read the Chrysler press release.

Report: Gibbs Aquada amphibious car hobbled by federal requirements, but aqua-ATV on the way?

The Man is back to his old tricks again: this time doing his best to keep down a fledgling amphibious car manufacturer. Gibbs Technologies is reportedly running into a tangle of regulation when it comes to bringing its Aquada to market - an amphibious vehicle that’s said to be just as home on the lake as it is motoring around your neighborhood. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, the main issue seems to be that regulatory bodies want the car to conform to safety and emissions standards for both cars and boats. Unfortunately, those two worlds aren’t exactly compatible. For starters, the EPA wants the Aquada to use a standard catalytic converter. Unfortunately, the emissions equipment needs to operate at close to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit - nearly 1,200 degrees more than what the U.S. Coast Guard allows on a typical watercraft.

Things get even more complicated on the safety front. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration wants the Aquada to come equipped with airbags, only Gibbs Technologies worries that pounding from waves will set the devices off accidentally - a scenario that we’d rather not encounter.

In order to help put some of the worries surrounding the Aquada aside, the company is planning to release an amphibious ATV called the Quadski. With a top speed of around 45 mph on both land and water, the craft should be the Aquada’s high-strung younger brother without many of the same thorny legal issues. So far, Gibbs hasn’t released any photos or information on the Quadski, but the company plans to begin selling the craft next year.

First Drive: 2011 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive makes a lot of sense for a few people

2011 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive - Click above for high-res image gallery

As a population, the way we approach transportation hasn’t changed significantly since the aircraft first fluttered onto the scene way back in 1903. In over 100 years, we’ve simply been refining the recipe we know the best instead of coming up with a new brew all together. Doing so has inextricably tied our civilization to the internal combustion engine, complete with all of its pitfalls. While we’ve more or less known that roping ourselves to oil is neither sustainable nor responsible since the early ’70s, it wasn’t until gas prices went haywire that the American population realized just how dependent it was on the black stuff.

Conveniently, with those astronomical figures at the pump came the plucky little Smart ForTwo, a car that symbolized what could be accomplished if a driver were willing to sacrifice everything for a low-cost, high-efficiency vehicle. With fuel prices hovering above $4.00 per gallon, sales exploded for a short time, and news outlets around the country heralded Smart as the face of the future for U.S. transportation. But it wasn’t long before gas prices crawled back down, and Smart sales went catatonic just as quickly as they took off.

Now the company has jumped into the race to be one of the first to bring a completely viable electric vehicle to market with the 2011 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. It’s a move that just might alter the transportation landscape for good - not just in the U.S,, but around the globe.
