HP: More Than Printers, and Willing to Waste Money to Prove It

Hewlett-Packard launches a star-studded campaign — which an unnamed source told The Wall Street Journal will cost $40 million — to change its image as a printer and PC company. But is it just a waste of shareholder money?

Videos: Dacia Duster looks good in motion

2011 Dacia Duster - click above to watch the video after the jump

By and large, the Geneva Motor Show isn’t like U.S. auto shows in that grandiose press conferences just don’t exist like they do here. Or, at least, like they used to here. Most vehicles just show up on the show floor and we snap photos at a fevered pace in an effort to get those pics to you as quickly as possible. The upside for us is that we can rip through posts at a fevered pitch for your enjoyment. The downside is that every once in a while we miss something, and this year we forgot to cover the Dacia Duster, though we did tell you about it in advance. Still, our bad.

Renault’s Romanian-bred SUV is built to be affordable, attractive and capable, with a 30 degree approach and a 36 degree departure for relatively some serious off-roading. The Duster even comes diesel-ready, with a 105 horsepower, 266 pound-feet of torque powerplant that we’d love to try for ourselves. And if an earlier report from The Wall Street Journal is correct, Renault is even pondering bringing the Duster to U.S. shores.

Until that happens, we have to make do with a couple of videos showing off just how capable the Duster is. The first spot shows us how the Dacia handles off-road chores and the second seeks to illustrate that it isn’t a dud on dry pavement, either. Hit the jump to watch the two videos for yourself.

Report: Another Prius accelerates unintentionally in New York and crashes

Not one day after a high-profile incident involving a Prius taking off on its owner in Southern California, we’re hearing reports that another one of Toyota’s popular hybrids has suffered unintended acceleration in New York. This time, instead of the car eventually succumbing to the will of its braking system, it crashed into a stone wall. Fortunately the owner was reportedly just pulling out of her driveway in Harrison, NY and the car only accelerated across the street, though the collision allegedly sent “some pretty big boulders” flying, said one police chief.

The 56-year-old driver reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries, and like the incident in Southern California a day earlier, a floor mat trapping the accelerator pedal has been ruled out as a cause. The 2005 model year Prius’ driver side floor mat was reportedly tied to the seat base with plastic ties.

The 2004-2009 Prius is included in an earlier Toyota recall for floor mats that may entrap the accelerator pedal, but the Japanese automaker does not have a fix ready for the cars, which may include reshaping their pedals, replacing floor mats and altering the shape of the floor. These cars are not, however, included in Toyota’s other major recall involving drive-by-wire accelerator pedal assemblies that could stick due to wear and other environmental conditions. That leaves no obvious explanation as to why these two Prius models took off on their owners. Toyota has stated it will join California and the U.S. government in investigating the first vehicle, though hasn’t commented on whether it will investigate the vehicle in New York yet.

Inside Wall Street: Ed Yardeni’s Dozen Reasons to Be Bullish

Back in March 2009, only a few savvy observers realized stocks had dropped to ground-zero level. One of those who did was Ed Yardeni, president and chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research. And now, he sees the market going even higher, based on economic and market factors.

Who says Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers don’t race each other?

Last week in The Wall Street Journal, writer Ben Austen publised an article in which he ruminates on why no one appears to be racing the Detroit 3’s neo-muscle offerings - the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. That the piece succeeds overwhelmingly at, however, is highlighting the myopia of America’s mainstream press when it comes to motorsports. Many people in media seem to be completely unaware that there are forms of automotive competition other than NASCAR, because the cars the WSJ article focuses on most assuredly are involved in active competition.

NASCAR may be the big dog in terms of the number of races, sponsor participation, and even people at the track. But by no means is anything about modern stock car racing in any way relevant. A more important question might be why automakers continue pour hundreds of millions of dollars into NASCAR every year, but we’ll leave that for another day.

All three of the current crop of pony cars compete in a wide variety of racing, from drags to ovals and road courses. Ford in particular has offered turnkey Mustang race cars for several years, and they’ve been very successful in a number of classes, including the NASCAR-owned Grand-Am series. In fact, fans watching the 2010 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge will see Mustangs, Camaros, and at least one Dodge Challenger slugging it out on a regular basis.

Pratt & Miller racing currently runs a program in which it converts Grand-Am Pontiac GXP.Rs to Camaro bodies. Dodge Challengers can be found at many drag strips (along with innumerable Mustangs and Camaros). And let’s not forget that NASCAR is running Challenger- and Mustang-branded stockers in a few Nationwide Series races this year as part of its own “Car of Tomorrow” program.

Admittedly, it would be nice to see a revival on the level of the old Trans Am series, with all three of these machines running in force, but journalists like Mr. Austen would do well to remove the NASCAR blinders before summarily dismissing the modern pony cars as being absent from today’s racing scene. It’s just not so.

Will Bad Press Affect Goldman Sachs’s Fortunes?

JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs raked in the most fees on Wall Street in 2009, but the similarities end there. Goldman is reeling from bad press as its dealings with Greece may be probed, while JP Morgan remains well-regarded. Will public opinion affect the firms’ financial performance?

Wall Street Honcho Harold Ford Jr. Won’t Run For Senate

Former Tenn. Rep. Harold Ford Jr., who made $2 million last year as a vice-chairman at Merrill Lynch, will not run for U.S. Senate from New York, ending nearly two months of flirtation, speculation and not a little mud-slinging. In an op-ed to be published Tuesday in The New York Times, the former Tennessee Democratic congressman says he wants to avoid a “brutal” primary that might “help”…
