Inside Wall Street: Need a Java Jolt? Try Smucker
J.M. Smucker (SJM) has long been known as a jam and peanut butter brand. But as coffee continues to be the popular everyday beverage for millions of Americans, Smucker has lately emerged as an unlikely java play — with due apologies to Starbucks (SBUX).

Disappointing New Home Sales in November May Be a Tax Credit Glitch
Dec 23, 2009 Object
New homes sales unexpectedly plunged 11.3% in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 355,000, the U.S. Commerce Department announced Wednesday. Demand tapered off as the popular federal first-time home buyer credit was originally set to expire at the end of the month. It was eventually, however, extended by Congress.

Why is Oprah going to cable? A hint: It’s nothing to get teary about

Oprah Winfrey is a smart cookie. I am guessing she knows all too well that you can make more money in cable than you can on a TV network. If it’s like other cable networks, her new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which she co-owns with Discovery Communications (DISCA), will be much more profitable than the TV networks.
And her departure from her popular show will cost those TV networks big money. How much? Show broadcaster, Walt Disney’s (DIS) ABC, will lose millions in ad revenues, according to the New York Times. CBS Corp. (CBS), which owns Oprah’s syndication rights, will similarly lose millions.

RIM blows earnings, investors punish shares
Sep 24, 2009 Object
Filed under: Earnings, Research In Motion
Research in Motion, (RIMM) the maker of the popular BlackBerry device, earned a Bronx cheer from investors Thursday after the company announced second quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street expectations. Also disconcerting: the company issued a revenue forecast for the current quarter below what analysts had anticipated.
RIM shares hit free-fall seconds after the announcement, plunging nearly 10 percent in after-hours trading. The company’s poor showing is a slap in the face of Wall Street analysts who had been raising their RIM projections for last quarter and the current period amid growing buzz across the hand-held sector over the summer.

Starbucks chooses a cheap social-media campaign to push Via instant coffee
Filed under: Company News, Media, Starbucks
In February, Starbucks (SBUX) invited AOL to taste a secret new product. In my capacity as a coffee and Starbucks expert, I got a few samples of the product, Via, and uploaded photographs to Flickr before giving my verdict.
I’d almost forgotten that Via’s national launch was coming up — next Tuesday — until I received an email from Starbucks’s Via “moderator,” thanking me for posting such a great photo, and offering me both free instant-coffee packets and instant fame in the product’s launch. All it would take, online community manager Anali Orr told me, was my permission (pdf link) to give Starbucks “a perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive fully-paid up and royalty free license” “without restrictions of any kind and without any payment or other consideration of any kind” — other than, of course, three months’ worth of free coffee packets.

StockTwits peels off Twitter: Will others follow?
Sep 3, 2009 Object
When one of the best recognized Twitter-centric applications decides to relaunch itself as a desktop client that no longer relies on Twitter, what does this mean? That’s exactly what StockTwits did this week with the unveiling of its desktop software, a product that TechCrunch reviewed as a sort of Bloomberg terminal and chat system for the trading masses.
StockTwits formerly rode on top of Twitter and allowed users to follow tweet streams by ticker, hastag or user. It created a filter system that made it easier to manage and limit down tweets to cater to the specific interest of a trader and to build communities around specific trading topics. The new backend will function outside of Twitter, leading to an obvious question: if StockTwits no longer needs Twitter, then who does? Perhaps more importantly, is Twitter the next AIM? Like the popular messaging app, it has a lot of staying power and easy to copy; similarly, it is nearly impossible to make money on because its so fungible and easy to copy.

News & Rants: Cash for Clunkers Gets $2 Billion in Additional Funding
Aug 7, 2009 Object
Cash for Clunkers is open for business (again). President Barack Obama signed a bill today that adds $2 billion to the popular program’s coffers.
Cash for Clunkers gives car owners who turn in their clunkers a $3,500 or $4,500 credit toward the purchase of a new, fuel-efficient car. It originally had $1 billion in funding, but that money was quickly exhausted after its July 27 launch. The U.S. Senate passed a bill Thursday that added $2 billion to the program; the U.S. House of Representatives passed the same bill last week.
The $2 billion is enough money to get approximately an additional 500,000 clunkers off the road. The program is slated to end Nov. 1 or when the money runs out.
