Video: BMW’s iDrive gets improved iPod functionality
Filed under: Technology, Videos, BMW
One of the next steps to evolve BMW’s iDrive into Connected Drive is increasing the communication the car has with peripherals. In this case, work is nearly complete on you being able to control your iPod Touch (and, we’re guessing, your iPhone) and all of its applications using the same Apple interface on the car’s console screen.
Not only might it make navigation of your music files easier, but it would make any application you download for your iPod Touch immediately usable in your Bimmer. BMW doesn’t give much away in terms of how this all comes together, but does say that the feature will be available on BMW’s as soon as early 2011. Follow the jump to see the vid.

Sales of Nissan NV commercial van pushed back to early 2011
Jul 9, 2010 Object
Filed under: Car Buying, Minivan/Van, Work, Nissan
If you’ve been champing at the bit to get your hands on Nissan’s forthcoming NV series of vans, you’ll have to wait a few months longer.
According to a Nissan spokesperson, production of the NV1500, 2500 and 3500 commercial vans has been delayed until the first quarter of 2011, with sales beginning shortly thereafter. The reason for the delay - and the subsequent model year change from 2011 to 2012 - was due in part to the engineering team asking for more time to complete additional validation. Contrary to earlier reports, the 2011 Nissan Quest has not be delayed and sales are still set to begin early next year.

Amazon’s Value Is Fading in the Age of Apple
Jul 1, 2010 Object
Amazon has been one of the most resilient Internet stocks. But now, with the iPod, iTunes and iPad, Apple is seriously threatening Amazon’s key strength — its control over online sales of media. That’s why the tumble in Amazon’s stock could mark a turning point.

Chronolyze unleashes the potential of Porsche’s Sport Chrono Plus
Jun 9, 2010 Object
Porsche’s optional “Sport Chrono Package” adds a Sport button to the center console that kicks throttle, suspension and engine behavior up a few notches. It also adds a cool swivel-mounted timer to the center of the dashboard (essentially so your friends and passers-by know you have it) and launch control on PDK-equipped models. The upgraded “Sport Chrono Package Plus” adds a memory function to the system and the ability to display and review some of the lap data on the Porsche PCM (multi-function display).
The on-board PCM analysis only scratches the surface, says the team at Chronolyze. According to their engineers (no relation to Porsche AG), the Chrono Package Plus records vehicle speed, engine speed, transmission gear, steering angle, lateral g-forces, engine temperature, outside temperature, distance traveled, altitude and GPS coordinates (on NAV-equipped vehicles). That’s a ton of information that is left sitting completely unused.
Since none of this data is available via the PCM, Chronolyze has developed software that extracts the text files (through Bluetooth or the iPod connection) so they may be further analyzed on a computer. The Chronolyze software organizes the data, calculates a 3D analysis of the laps (so they may be played back in real-time animations), and then graphs it all out for your viewing pleasure. In addition, the software also allows users to share telemetry, give ratings and overlay sessions from multiple files. If you’ve got a properly equipped Porsche in your driveway, give it a trial run. You can get your free beta account here.

Marchionne says "Probably 2011" on Chrysler IPO, wants GM to go first
Filed under: Chrysler, Earnings/Financials, Fiat
Everyone is watching General Motors CEO Ed Whitacre, Jr. to see what he’ll be able to pull of this year with respect to his plans, including a possible IPO. Count Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne among the interested. While the Fiat 500’s introduction will likely result in Fiat upping its Chrysler stake to 25 percent, when it comes to a Chrysler IPO, Marchionne is thinking 2011, and he wants GM to go first, according to Automotive News.
Marchionne feels there’s enough investor interest for both GM and Chrylser IPOs, but said, “Let him go, he’s been itching to go,” in reference to Whitacre wanting a GM IPO as soon as this year. Chrysler has good reason to wait. It’s arguably further behind than GM in its turnaround, and whereas GM has the Volt to make a potential shareholder splash in 2010, Chrysler’s product fireworks won’t really start booming until next year.
For now, Chrysler milestones are being reached ahead of schedule and things in Auburn Hills are going well enough to get Marchionne to say, “May is “turning out to be a good month.” A Chrysler IPO is obviously desired, but based on Marchionne’s latest statements, it remains in the distance.
