First Droid, then AdMob: Google goes for Apple’s jugular in mobile business

The $750 million acquisition of mobile advertising network AdMob by search giant Google (GOOG) signals a new stage of the battle for the soul of the mobile Internet between Google and its arch-rival Apple (AAPL). The acquisition gives Google the strongest player in the fast-growing market for putting advertisements on smartphones. And it’s the latest brawny move by Google in an unspoken war that has broken into pitched battle in the past two weeks.

On Friday, Google for the first time put an advertisement on its home page, a spot for Motorola’s (MOT) Droid smartphone. The Droid, offered exclusively by wireless behemoth Verizon (VZ), is powered by Google’s own Android mobile operating system. Early indications suggest the Droid will be the strongest competitor to Apple’s iPhone to date. Real estate on Google’s landing page is a priceless gift from the Google gods, letting Verizon easily reach millions and millions of users who go to Google.com to search.

Change in accounting for iPhone sales could drive Apple revenues way up

On his “Mad Money” show on September 16, Jim Cramer went nuts on Apple (AAPL), saying he thinks shares are going to soar after an accounting change lets Apple book the full dollar amount of each iPhone sold upfront. This has been a recurrent theme among Apple bulls lately.

Wall Street has a funny habit of failing to take into account obvious factors that impact the intrinsic value of companies, and this is a classic example of such a case. For Apple shareholders, the impact could be profound, with shares in the company that CEO and founder Steve Jobs rebuilt going vertical in a hurry. Shares were up nearly eight percent in the past week, a big lift for a company with a share price in the $180 range like Apple.

Analyst says iPhones on multiple carriers next year: we say, probably not

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has been a leader in nailing Apple (AAPL) news and trends ahead of the Wall Street pack. On Monday, he sent a note to clients stating that Apple will likely be selling its iPhone on other carriers in the U.S. sometime next year, as reported by TUAW.

I think Apple eventually will undertake such a program, but next year seems highly unlikely. For starters, if Apple abandons AT&T (T), it will likely get a smaller cut of revenues and sharing. Exclusivity has a price, and Apple will pay to do business with others.

Tech media turns on Apple: Will iPhone, Mac suffer?

In a heavily commented post on his blog, TechCrunch, uber blogger Michael Arrington updated the world on how he ditched his iPhone and ported his cell phone number to become a GoogleVoice number. His rationale? He was sick of AT&T’s (T) bad coverage and sick of Apple’s (AAPL) heavy-handed restrictions on iPhone apps. Earlier this weekend, Jason Calacanis, Mahalo.com founder (and also former CEO of Weblogs Inc., which AOL purchased), wrote a strong anti-Apple manifesto on his semi-regular email newsletter. The newsletter reaches thousands of techno-fiends who follow Calacanis avidly.

Add to them GigaOm founder Om Malik, who ditched his iPhone last February and The New York TimesDavid Pogue, a true Apple lover, and we seem to have a budding rebellion among elite tech journalists against Apple. That’s very bad news for Steve Jobs and company.

Can iPhone growth outpace decline in Apple’s laptop sales?

With Apple (AAPL) set to report its third quarter earnings today after the closing bell, expectations for the computer, mobile phone and software company are running rather high. So high that some analysts are expecting blow-out earnings numbers from the Cupertino, California company.

A number of prominent Wall Street analysts who follow Apple have come out with projections that the company will record a very strong quarter in terms of notebook sales, after a report from retail trend tracker NPD noted favorable Mac sales numbers. But tech consulting company IDC also issued Apple computer sales figures for the previous three months, and its conflicting report showed a decline of 12.1 percent, year over year.
