Lexus issues stop-sale, recall on LS 460 and LS 600h
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Lexus, Luxury

True to predictions, The Detroit News is reporting that Lexus has issued a stop sale on its LS 460 and LS 600h (standard and long-wheelbase) luxury sedans due to a problem with the electronic steering system that can temporarily cause the steering wheel to become off-centered. Apparently, the wheel will return to its correct position after about five seconds of misalignment. Toyota issued a recall on Friday, May 21st to address the defect. Click here to see the recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Although Toyota has reportedly fixed the problem on new models rolling down the assembly lines in Japan, those recalibrated machines are not expected to hit dealership lots in America until the middle of June. In the meantime, the 3,800 or so owners of affected 2009 and 2010 LS sedans are being urged to avoid turning the steering wheel rapidly after holding it in full lock in the opposite direction.
We would imagine that there are certain scenarios where following such advice may prove difficult to follow, but Toyota is so far reporting that no injuries or accidents have been caused by the issue.

Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) is coming this year

Hot on the heels of the recent revelation that Infiniti is working on a duo of new G-based vehicles slated to debut at this year’s Pebble Beach extravaganza, we’ve come across a trademark filing by Nissan North America for “IPL.” What’s IPL you ask? Infiniti Performance Line, a new catalog of in-house developed upgrades which - according to the filing - will include everything from air filters to cat-back exhaust systems, and - more intriguingly - “automotive engine parts, namely turbochargers and superchargers.”
The approach is likely to be similar to how NISMO develops and markets parts for Nissan or, more accurately, Lexus’ launch of its F-Sport performance line.
This new line of performance parts will likely be unveiled this August in Pebble Beach and be fitted to the G37 coupe. How extensive the modifications are remains to be seen, but as previously reported, one of the models set to debut will be “performance oriented,” and if forced induction is part of the package, we’re anxiously awaiting our rendezvous with the modded coupe this summer.

Inside Wall Street: Will Electronic Arts Become a Takeover Play?
Despite having some big-name titles, such as Madden NFL, EA’s stock has been in the dumps. The bears say there’s good reason for that and don’t expect it to perk up. The bulls, however, see a company with healthy potential that’s alluringly cheap for a bigger tech partner.

Report: NHTSA turns an eye towards electronics as source of Toyota troubles
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Toyota

Reports from multiple news outlets cite sources within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who claim the government is now looking into electrical problems as the source for Toyota’s recall troubles. The unnamed agency employee reportedly told CNN that the government is investigating whether electromagnetic interference might cause the electronic throttle control system to malfunction. The source went on to add that the agency has found no evidence of problems with the electronic throttle, though engineers at NHTSA were still actively investigating the matter.
News of a possible electronics investigation comes not long after Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood claimed that NHTSA “wasn’t done with Toyota,” and that the Japanese automaker was “a little safety deaf.” Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota’s vice president in charge of quality, reportedly claimed that the embattled automaker has never found any evidence of electrical problems, a familiar line from the automaker that we’ve heard since the latest recall was announced. Toyota has been quick to state, however, that it will do anything possible to cooperate in the investigation.
At least one safety expert feels NHTSA should have investigated electronic issues long ago. Sean Kane, president of Safety Research Strategies, said in a recent interview that “by all appearances, electronics are playing a significant role in the problems.” Kane says 2002-2006 Camry and 2005-2007 Tacoma models should specifically be investigated, and he points to a case of a 2005 Camry owner who experienced unintended acceleration as he attempted to park. The driver instead launched 23 feet and then dropped off of a 70-foot cliff, killing the driver’s wife. Kane says the floor mat was securely fastened to the floor when the accident occurred.
As is typically the case with “anonymous sources,” we expect an announcement from NHTSA any day now. Is the safety organization trying to show Congress just how hard it’s working to find a solution for Toyota’s problems in advance of the February 10 hearing on Capitol Hill? Could be, but more negative press is the last thing Toyota needs right now.

Alfa Romeo prepares special-edition MiTo for Maserati dealer network
Jan 28, 2010 Object
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Luxury
If you’re dropping off a six-figure Italian exotic at the dealership for service, you expect to be loaned something special in return, right? That’s why Fiat supplied Ferrari with a run of special-edition 500s for use in their European service network. (Heck, they even produced some for public consumption.) Now its classy kid sister is following suite with a special loaner car of its own.
Produced in a limited run of 100 units, these specially-prepared Alfa Romeo MiTos will be dispatched to Maserati dealers across Europe. Each is distinguished from the average MiTo by its Maserati Blu Oceano paint, special plaque on the center console and “Alfa Romeo for Maserati” sill plate. The special edition Alfa also comes equipped with top-of-the-range 170-horsepower, 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo engine, 18-inch wheels and rear spoiler, along with an interior decked out in sumptuous Pelle Frau leather and all the electronic bells and whistles on offer.
After Maserati gave Alfa the 8C Competizione, it’s nice that Alfa - now under the same leadership as Maserati - can give a little something back. Details in the press release after the jump.

Breaking: House to hold hearing on Toyota recalls
Filed under: Government/Legal, Recalls, Toyota
As it’s wont to do, the U.S. House of Representatives has decided to investigate Toyota over its recent recalls involving possible unintended acceleration caused by both floor mats and defective accelerator pedal mechanisms. The House Energy and Commerce committee will hold a hearing on February 25 to “examine the persistent consumer complaints of sudden unintended acceleration in vehicles manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation,” this according to committee chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif (above). Not only will Toyota be on the hot seat, but the committee will also investigate how well the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has handled the situation.
The Detroit News reports that Toyota officials already met with members of the committee on Wednesday. They were asked to provide the committee with information and documents and will be expected to answer questions at the hearing about when they first learned of cases involving unintended acceleration in their vehicles and what steps were taken to safeguard customers who might be at risk. They’ll probably also be asked about the connection between NHTSA and Toyota through one Mr. Christopher Santucci, a former NHTSA employee who took a job with Toyota around the same time these issues were first being investigated.
It’s also fair to point out that this isn’t the first time a recall has gained the attention of Capitol Hill. The recall involving Firestone tires on Ford Explorers in 2000 sparked Congressional hearings, for instance.
